Course description |
Although there many experimental techniques to investigate molecular motions, dielectric relaxation technique will be explained in this class. Dielectric relaxation can sensitively detect the presence of dipole moments and their rotation relaxation times. Then, if molecules and functional groups possess dipole moments, the rates of molecular motions for each molecule and group can be determined hierarchically. |
Expected Learning |
The definition of electric permittivity will be first given, then experimental methods will be explained. A general method for the consideration of molecular dynamics using dielectric relaxation techniques will be learned. |
Course schedule |
1 Definitions of electric permittivity, polarization and electric displacement 2 Dipole moment and internal electric field 3 Complex electric permittivity 4 Experimental Techniques 5 Dielectric relaxation of Gas 6 Dielectric relaxation of liquid 7 Debye's idea 8 Mechanisms of dielectric relaxation 9 Summary |
