Course description |
This course provides an easy understanding and systematic introduction to the increasingly diverse and complex issues associated with soil and groundwater contamination including radioactive pollution induced by the nuclear disaster. Specific coverage will include: the reasons and categories, historic changes, situations, current status and subjects associated with environmental remediation, risk assessment and discussions from epidemiological viewpoints, new trends in related research fields and sustainable remediation with a balanced consideration among environmental, social and economic aspects. |
Expected Learning |
By receiving this lecture, one can master the systematic knowledge about soil and groundwater contamination and will be capable of identifying related subjects for future research. A deeper discussion with the instructor will also be possible during the lecture and after submitting the report for course credit. |

1st: History and Current Status of Soil and Groundwater Contamination 2nd: Low-Cost, In Situ Environmental Remediation Technologies (Physiochemical Approaches) 3rd: Low-Cost, In Situ Environmental Remediation Technologies (Biochemical Approaches) 4th: Risk Assessment and Discussions from Epidemiological Viewpoints 5th: New Trends Associated with Countermeasures Against Soil Contamination To get the course credit, a report must be submitted within 2 weeks after the lecture. |
Prerequisites |
Basic knowledge on soil physics, chemistry and organic chemistry is preferable but not obligatory. |
