Course description
Atoms and molecules are the smallest units showing the properties of materials. Due to these reasons it is of significant importance to understand the basic quantum theories of atoms and molecules and to obtain intuitive insight of them in dealing with various phenomena of materials science.
Expected Learning
1) To become able to qualitatively explain the electronic stuctures of many-electron atoms based on the understanding of the approximation methods for their energies and wave functions.
2) To become able to explain the spectroscopic propertis of diatomic molecules based on the understanding of the cause of chemical bonds.
3) To become able to outline the recent topics of atomic and molecular spectroscopy.
Course schedule
(1) Introduction.
(2) Revision to the one-electron and two-electron atoms (I).
(3) Revision to the one-electron and two-electron atoms (II).
(4) Wave functions of many-electron atoms; basic concept.
(5) Internal potentials of many-electron atoms.
(6) Approximation methods for internal potentials and wave functions of many-electron atoms (I).
(7) Approximation methods for internal potentials and wave functions of many-electron atoms (II).
(8) Chmeical bond: hydrogen moleclar ion.
(9) Chmeical bond: hydrogen molecle.
(10) Molecular structure: complex diatomic molecules.
(11) Rotational spectra of diatomic mouecules
(12) Ro-vibrational spectra of diatomic mouecules.
(13) Electronics spectra of diatomic molecules.
(14) Luminescence, non-radiative decay and bond dissociation of excited molecules.
(15) Superexcited molecules.
Prerequisites
"Quantum mechanics I and II", "Atomic and Molecular Physics" are assumed to be completed. Learning "Applied Quantum Mechanics" is highly recommended.
