Course description |
This course provides basic theories and one-day training of charcoal making. Participants learn how to make charcoal (biochar) from bamboo and agricultural resides, then, share and exchange the ideas how to use charcoal for agricultural development and environmental conservation in participants’ countries. |
Expected Learning |
1) To understand the basic knowledge and skills of charcoal making and 2) to exchange ideas for improving agriculture and environment in home countries of the participants. |
Course schedule |
1. Introduction: Making a bon fire 2. Pit kiln I: Making charcoal from mulberry branches 3. Pit kiln II: Making bamboo charcoal 4. Chimney-standing device for making rice husk charcoal 5. Other applications: smoke-less charcoal making; energy-efficient cooking stoves. 6. (Lecture) TUAT's Charcoal Project in Vietnam 7. (Discussion) How can we apply charcoal technology for rural livelihoods and environmental conservation? |
Prerequisites |
1. One day exercise will be held on Saturday, October or November 2017 at Tsukui Farm of TUAT, Midori Ward, Sagamihara City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Transportation cost of JPY 2,000 is needed with your own lunch. 2. A seminar class will be held on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2017, 9:00 to 12:00 at TUAT School Festival. |
