Course description
This course provides basic theories and outdoor training of charcoal making. Participants learn how to make charcoal (biochar) from bamboo and agricultural residues, then, share and exchange the ideas on how to use charcoal for agricultural development and environmental conservation in participants' countries.
Expected Learning
1) To understand the basic theories and skills of charcoal making.
2) to exchange ideas on charcoal application for improving agriculture and environment in home countries.
Course schedule
On October 19, 2019 at Field Museum Tsukui (TUAT Tsukui Farm), Sagamihara City
1. Agrowaste and local biomass
2. Pit kiln: Making charcoal from bamboo and mulberry branches
3. Drum kiln and Iwate kiln: Structure and working process
4. Chimney-standing device for making rice husk/sawdust charcoal
5. Challenges for smoke-less charcoal making.

Prerequisites
Each participant needs JPY 1,980 for a round trip from Fuchu to FM Tsukui (PASMO and SUICA are available for trains and buses). Please prepare own lunch and drink.
Participants are requested to take field notes during the course and sufficiently review for writing an assignment report.
