Course description
The goal of this course is to understand principal issues related to farm management and basic tools for analysis of farm management.
Farm management is an organization that is managed and run for agricultural production in accordance with a managerial agent’s will. Previously, the main agent of farm management is a family-managed farm; however, in recent years farm management agents have become diversified with increases in the number of agricultural production firms or of community-based farming organizations. Moreover, a farm manager has increasing opportunities to work with non-agricultural enterprises in the wake of promotion of rokuji-sangyoka --agricultural business diversification and integration related to manufacturing and commercial sectors― or collaboration of agricultural, commercial and manufacturing sectors.
With these recent trends in mind, we discuss basic characteristics of farm management invariant regardless of farm management types as well as differences in producer management objective and behavior by types.
Expected Learning
Students are expected to learn basic issues regarding farm management and explain them. Also, they are expected to obtain basic analytical tools and apply them to various issues.

1. Guidance, goals and schedule of the course, nature of farm management
2. Rational behavior of agricultural producer, farm practices and farming systems: fundamental principles and history
3. Farm management types: family-managed farm, corporate farm, collective farm
4. Farm economy: total revenue, production cost, profit
5. Production cost by products
6. Land utilization/allocation: von Thunen’s “The Isolated State”
7. Optimum choice of products: Linear programming (LP)
8. Farm accounting (1)
9. Farm accounting (2)
10. Rational behavior of corporate farm (1)
11. Rational behavior of corporate farm (2), economies of scale,
division of labor, specialization
12. Rational behavior of family-managed farm (1):
agricultural household model
13. Rational behavior of family-managed farm (2):
agricultural household model, economies of scope, farm diversification
14. Present situations of farm management and surrounding it: agricultural terms of trade and policies, policies, Diversity in farm management forms

Prerequisites
This is part of the Courses of Agricultural Economics and Management, and its completion is recommended for students in the Department of Biological Production. In addition to 30 hours that students spend in the class, students are recommended to prepare for and revise the lectures, spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University and using the lecture handouts as well as the references specified below.
