Course description
In this lecture, students will be presented basic and elementary organic chemistry that is essential for the science course. Specific coverage includes chemical bond in molecules, hybridized orbital, delocalization of electron in molecules and ions, concept of acids and bases, stereochemistry in molecules, properties of various functional group. Chemical reactions are classified according to functional groups.
Expected Learning
Students are necessarily required to comprehend the specified textbook as well as material supplied in this class.

Chapter 1: What is organic reaction?
Chapter 2: Classification and nomenclature of organic compounds
Chapter 3: Alkanes and cyclic alkanes―radical reactions
Chapter 4: Alkenes and alkynes
Chapter 5: Stereochemistry
Chapter 6: Aromatic compounds
Chapter 7: Reaction of halogenated alkanes (SN2, SN1, E2 and E1)
Chapter 8: Carbonyl compounds I (formation of carbon-carbon covalent bonds)
Chapter 9: Carbonyl compounds II (carboxylic acids and derivatives)
Chapter 10: Alcohols, phenols, ethers and epoxides
Chapter 11: Amines and derivatives―compounds with nitrogen atoms
Prerequisites
Sufficient understanding of Chemistry in high school (Chemistry I and Chemistry II) is required.

Assessment/Grading
Midterm examination (50%) and endterm examination (50%).
Make-up and/or reexamination will not be put into practice.
Attendance to lectures and submit of reports are not required.
