Course description |
Outline (Essay Writing): Building on the writing skills and knowledge learned in the Paragraph Writing course, this class aims to advance students’ writing skills by developing paragraphs into cohesive and coherent essays. Students will learn how to shape their arguments into essays through the process of outlining ideas, creating essay drafts, and revising the texts into stronger arguments. The classes are formed according to the degree of students’ English proficiency and advancement. This course is offered as an intermediate writing course in the English curriculum of Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology. |
Expected Learning |
Objectives (Essay Writing): 1) Students should be able to compose a variety of essays such as informative, argumentative, and comparative essays. 2) Students should understand parts of an essay and learn to make the introduction to attract readers’ interest, the body to develop specific ideas, and the conclusion to wrap up the entire argument. Thus, they should be able to convey their ideas as cohesive essays. 3) Students should understand how to quote, paraphrase, and summarize the information from books, journals, or newspapers in order to support their essay argument and avoid plagiarism. They should also understand referencing styles and be able to make a reference list for their essays. 4) Students should be able to coherently develop their arguments with logical consistency through the process to repeatedly revising and editing their essay drafts. |

Prerequisites |
This course carries 1 credit. In addition to 30 hours that students spend in the class, they are recommended to prepare for, and review, the classes using the textbook and the reference books, spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University for each class. Students must attend at least 2/3 of a course in order to receive credit for that course. If students do not fully attend the class for two times, it should be counted as one time of absence. |
