Course description |
This course aims to develop second-year students’ reading skills, enabling them to read more advanced English texts. Students are given the opportunity to choose the genre of their reading materials from a variety of topics. Texts are expected to be more complex in terms of vocabulary, grammar, and style than those encountered in Integrated English. The English Reading course is divided into three groups, A-C. Students are requested to submit their preferred choice from among the following groups before registration. English Reading (A): Science and Technology In ER (A), students read articles relating to issues in science and technology. English Reading (B): Global News In ER (B), students read about topics relating to worldwide issues through a variety of news media. English Reading (C): Culture and Society In ER (C), students read articles focusing upon various aspects of culture and society. Evaluation includes each student’s TOEFL ITP test score, as converted to 20 percent of their final grade. All students must take the TOEFL ITP test on the second Saturday of December. This course is a required second-year course in the TUAT English curriculum. |
Expected Learning |
Students should attain level B2 in a variety of reading-related English skills as stated in the CEFR-J, a CEFR-based framework for ELT in Japan. To attain the objectives, during the course students will be expected to: 1. Become familiar with a variety of reading techniques such as skimming, scanning and summarizing. 2. Learn to read English texts both for comprehension and critical analysis. 3. Become independent learners, developing reading skills that can be used independently outside of class. |
Course schedule |
In this English Reading (B) course, students will read news articles on global companies from periodicals such as The Economist, The New York Times, and The Guardian. Students will facilitate the following skills: exploring the issues related to their study areas, conducting research on technologies and enterprises in the book chapters, giving group presentations to the class, and developing skills for discussion and feedback. Class 1 Introduction, groups Class 2 Reading 1 Airbnb Class 3 Reading 2 TED Talks Class 4 Reading 3, Presentation 1 Class 5 Reading 4, Presentation 2 Class 6 Reading 5, Presentation 3 Class 7 Summary (Reading 1 to Reading 5) and Exam 1 Class 8 Reading 6, Presentation 4, Reading Report 1 (PBS News Hour, BBC News etc.) Class 9 Reading 7, Presentation 5 Class 10 Reading 8, Presentation 6 Class 11 Reading 9, Presentation 7 Class 12 Reading 10, Reading Report 2 (TED Talks) Class 13 Reading 11, Presentation 8 Class 14 Summary (reading 7 to Reading 11) and Exam 2 Class 15 Reading Report Review / Comments ・All students are requested to attend the first class since group members and their chapters for presentation will be decided. ・Students will take quizzes after each lesson and two exams which include reporting what they have achieved in their self-study or group work for reading. |
Prerequisites |
This course is required for graduation. Students should make adequate preparations before each class spending the standard amount of time as specified by the university to achieve the credit as well as 30 hours of class attendance. Students must attend at least two-thirds of all classes to get credit. If a student does not fully attend the class (i.e. is present for less than the full 90 minutes) on two occasions, it should be counted as one absence. |
