Course description |
The importance of education for sustainable development (ESD) was highlighted in the World Summit on Sustainable Development (Johannesburg Summit) in 2002 and the Decade of ESD has been implemented worldwide from 2005 to 2014. This course provides students with an opportunity to review the background and basic framework of ESD and to consider ways of learning inherent to ESD. |

To develop own perception on how to understand development that has been facilitated by human beings from the aspects of ESD, environmental education, and development education. |
Course schedule |
The contents of this course are as follows. While two-third of the course will be intensive classes, the order of the contents is subject to change. Schedule of regular classes (Part 1): the 5th period, Fridays from October 5 to November 30 (5 classes) Schedule of intensive classes (Part II): November 4 (Sunday) 9:00-17:30, 18 (Sunday) 9:00-17:30 Part I: Discussion on Learning in ESD (Asaoka) (1) What does ESD ask for? (2)The depth and width of the world of KUDEN (3)"Learning" required in ESD① (4)"Learning" required in ESD② (5)Learning theory of ESD Part II: Theory and Practice of ESD (Noda ,Ishizaki,Sugayama) (1) Understanding ESD through a Case Study of a Nature School - Lecture on terminologies (environmental education, ESD, nature experience learning, nature school) - Introduction of various cases of nature schools in Japan - Workshop (2)Understanding ESD through media (3) Profound understanding of ESD by experiencing the method of nature experience learning Education for sustainable development (ESD) is relatively a new concept that has become widely known since Johannesburg Summit in 2002. However, ESD should not be discussed only from the viewpoint of environmental education. This course explores the possibilities of the study of ESD that overcomes the study of environmental education. It overviews the history and basic framework of environmental education and also development education, and considers how to learn in ESD through experiencing KUDEN or oral instruction/ inheritance. The concept of environmental education, since it appeared in the international society in 1970’s, has developed into the new concept of ESD while connecting with the concept of “sustainable development/ sustainability” and also with the intention toward the fairer world that development education has been based with. ESD is a new educational approach that values dialogues and participation with a vision for the future. It places significance on learning of organization and society and situational learning toward organizational/ social transformation. It can be defined as not a new field of education but “alternative education” required under globalization to which conventional education should approach. |
