Course description |
“Hikaku koudou gaku(比較行動学)” is one of the Japanese translation of “Ethology”, and “Ethology ” is also English translation of “VergleichendenVerhaltensforschung” or “Ethologie” in Germany. Translated faithful to the Germany original, it must be “Comparative(Vergleichenden) Behavioral(Verhaltens) Study(Forschung)”. In this course, not only animal behavior but also human behavior will be explained. |
Expected Learning |

Course schedule |
The modern cognitive behavioral study as historical development of ethology will be pursued with the connection to comparative psychology and comparative cognitive science. 1) The history of ethology Outline of famous ethological works of Konrad Lorenz, N.Tinberghen, W.H.Thorpe, K.v.Frisch, and I.Eibl-Eibesfeldt is explained. 2) Aims and Methods in Ethology Comprehending the fundamental attitudes in ethology of Tinberghen’s “4 areas in ethology” in 1980’s. 3) Modern development in ethological study Ethology started as studying animal behavior, and now today it includes human behavior. The modern meaning and development in ethological study will be discussed focusing comparative cognitive science. |
