Course description
This course will provide experimental/practical training in the field of biology, acquire knowledge on intracellular, ontogenetic and population-based study by using microorganisms, plants and animals, and ultimately master basic experimental technique needed to further curriculum.
Expected Learning
Course schedule
This course will consist of following part.
①Ecology of plants: Students will be conscious on ecology of plants via the examination of vegetation of forest and analysis of hierarchical framework of plants and interaction/relationship between each plants.
②Isolation and analysis of photosynthetic pigment: Students will learn general principle of chromatography and its application via extraction and isolation of chlorophyll and carotenoid from plants.
③Observation of chromosome of plants: Prepare chromosome sample by flattening out the meristem cells derived from plant root, and by smearing method for the salivary glands of chironomid, and compare visible characteristics of plants and animal chromosome.
Separation/isolation of tomato leaf protoplast: Students will visibly confirm separation of protoplast and cellular wall by using tomato leaf.
④Observation of red blood cells (erythrocytes) of insects.
⑤Animal nerves system and muscle contraction: Students will learn the mechanism of neuronal excitation by using peripheral nerves and muscle sample from flog. Several experiments on cardiac muscle which spontaneously beats will be also provided.
⑥Culture technique for microorganisms and fungi: As a basic experimental technique for microbiology, students will learn culture method of microorganisms and fungi. Prepare culture media, and culture these microorganisms in sterile condition by pure culture method, slide culture method plate culture method. Students will also learn gram staining.
