Course description |
This course aims to develop minds for knowledge creation and autonomous learning, and is designed as an introductory course for the Liberal Arts and Fundamental Studies. Students will experience different styles of lectures and classes depending on the contents. It consists of two parts. Part I : Common Introductory Program In this program that is common to all first-year students, students will learn about our university and think how they would pursue their academic life here. The university history and TUAT principals are described as well as our research activities, with the aim of encouraging students to engage in university study and to understanding the importance of designing their individual university life. Part II : Faculty-Specific Program The importance of communicating the learning and research results to the general public is increasing more and more in this decade. In this lesson, while learning about Science Communication, participants will discuss about how to teach difficult scientific contents to children and the public in an easy to understand manner. This lesson is related to all the content of classes held at our university and it is desirable to be conscious as one way of thinking when taking participants' department classes. |
Expected Learning |
1) To understand the autonomous learning in the University, and be able to design individual's academic life at University from broad perspectives. 2) To understand the various ways to teach the learning and research results to society. 3) To properly teach scientific contents to people of different ages with different backgrounds. 4) To have motivation and confidence for outreach activity. Course schedule |
Part I : Common Introductory Program 1. About the University (I) Brief history of the University. Talks from the President, the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, and the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. 2. About the University (II) Talks from the Heads of the Departments. 3. Studying at the University Differences between studying at high school and studying at university. Designing your academic life at the University from broad perspectives. Questioning minds that lead you to the depth of academic study and research 4. Energy-saving and Safety in university life Global warming and emission of green house gas. Our effort in reducing CO2 emission. Risk management in laboratories. Your action to ensure own and others' safety. Risks of harmful chemicals and proper ways of their disposal. 5. Research ethics Code of conduct for research integrity, and scientific misconducts. Falsification, fabrication, and plagiarism are discussed. Part II : Faculty-Specific Program Students will be required to actively participate in classes, such as presenting their own opinions or discussing them among participants. 6. Lecture by instructor (1) (Science literacy, Science communication) 7. Lecture by instructor (2) 8. Presentation by participants and group discussion (1) (Student select several scientific topics and introduce their ideas on how to teach those topics to children and adults using different manner). 9.Presentation by participants and group discussion (2) 10.Presentation by participants and group discussion (3) 11.Group discussion (1)(select the topics and improve the presentation) 12.Group discussion (2) 13.Presentation by each participant 14.Presentation by each participant 15.Presentation by each participant * 1-day extracurricular exercises to the facilities, where science communication is conducted, may be arranged, based on consultation with participants. If implemented, we will replace parts of Thursday lessons with 1-day extracurricular practice. |
Prerequisites |
Part I : In addition to 10 hours you spend in the class, you are recommended to review the classes spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University for each class, to plan out the courses to take and design how you would pursue your academic activities ahead. Part II : In addition to 20 hours you spend in the class, you are recommended to prepare your presentation spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University for each class. And please try to participate in class with a positive attitude. |

Part I (25%): Marks are given based on worksheets collected at the end of each class. Part II (75%): Subjective & active participation to the class is highly evaluated. |

Student will be studying various topics at university, but if it is only studies to take high scores in the exam and take credits, it can be a waste. While you are in the position of a student, you are already an expert who gained a lot of knowledge. Through this lesson, I would like you to have consciousness to think about how to teach what you learned to society. |
