Course description
Animal welfare may be misunderstood as welfare for human using animals, such as animal therapy. Animal welfare is also apt to be confused with animal rights, but animal welfare is not necessarily the case of accepting animal’s rights. We have a responsibility to treat captive animals with consideration of welfare. In this course, each types of welfare for various kinds of captive animals, such as livestock, experimental animal, zoo animal, companion animal, working animal and wild animal in captivity, will be lectured.
Expected Learning
You can recognize that there exists many welfare types for each kinds of captivity, and understand the concrete way of welfare for each captive animals.

Kaoru Suzuki, Field Science Center (Welfare for experimental animal, household animal, and zoo animal) The position of these animals in human

their welfare.

Yuji Takemura, Animal Science (Animal welfare of farm animals)
This section provides students with welfare issues for farm animals. Learners are expected to make their own opinions on how to realize the welfare-based practice for animal production and consumption.
Contents:
1. Development of animal welfare in farm animals (Part 1)
2. Development of animal welfare in farm animals (Part 2)
3. Welfare problems and solutions in the modern farm animal production system
4. Scientific methods for the assessment of animal welfare

Assessment/Grading
No. of attending the class must be 5 or more. Final grading will constitute of 30% for class performance and 70% for final examination.
