Course description
Sports & Physical Activity (Practical) make a positive contribution to the total wellbeing of individuals. This course provides the knowledge and understanding of the value of the activity, increased levels of fitness and competency in a wide variety of sports and recreation contexts and skills for those planning to be active.
These and other aspects of the course enable students to adopt and maintain an active lifestyle at TUAT. The benefits include more profound knowledge of sports and physical activity by positive psychological and social outcomes that characterize the quality of life. This course is offered as one of the three courses of Sports & Health Sciences.
Expected Learning
Students will select one activity/event and develop:
- The ability to plan and apply adequate methods that promote health, physical activity and enhanced sports skills.
- Extend their knowledge and understanding of the factors that influence health and participation in physical activity.
- An understanding of the safety arrangements, potential dangers, rules and regulation in activities and/or games.

Course schedule
Students should attend the orientation in the first week. You can then choose one among the arranged classes. In the previous year (2018), arranged classes are the following:
Week 1: Objectives, requirements, information and class organization
Week 2: Exercise skill test (practical skill test), group (or a team) formation, the decision of the goal of an individual and the group
Week 3: Practice method of safe sports 1: How to use sporting goods, facilities for accident prevention
Week 4: Practice method of safe sports 2: Warm-up method for injury prevention
Week 5: Effective exercise method for personal skill acquirement 1: receiving ball, setting ball
Week 6: Effective exercise method for personal skill acquirement 2: service, spiking
Week 7: Effective exercise method for team skill acquirement 1: receiving ball - setting ball, setting ball - spiking
Week 8: Effective exercise method for team skill acquirement 2: three-way attack
Week 9: Game method in consideration of an individual difference: design of the local rule, practice game
Week 10: Safety and efficient game administration: umpire method, official method, practice game
Week 11: Management of the game: plan of the league match
Week 12: Thinking about the way of enjoying that "watching" game: administration of the league match
Week 13: Thinking about the way of enjoying that "supporting" game: administration of the league match
Week 14: Global assessment: Exercise skill test (practical skill test) for the goal of the class: administration of the league match
Week 15: Self-assessment for a group and the personal goal: Hand in the paper report
In 2019, the classes will be re-arranged.
Each class has a fixed number of participants. If a class reaches the number, the students will be assigned to another class.
Prerequisites
Attend the class specified by your department.
In addition to 30 hours students spend in the class, students are recommended to prepare for and review the classes, using the handouts provided and spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University for each class.

Assessment/Grading
Four or more absences will result in a failing grade.
Evaluation standards are determined from the sum (100 % possible) of the following two criteria:
1. Skill improvement and Participation policy (up to 55 %)
Skill improvement: Improve your own or another's skill and performance, understanding for sports rules, ability for game management.
Participation policy: Exhibit good effort at all times. The following will positively affect your final grade:
- Make voluntary efforts
- Ensure a safe environment for yourself and other students
- Cooperate with other students
- Appropriately treat sports equipment
2. Class Participation (up to 45 %)
Maintain your physical and mental condition in good and practice your exercise voluntarily.
Message from instructor(s)
Students will be required to dress for every class in sportswear. Proper clothing and shoes should be worn to allow for easy movement and good traction on each surface.
All equipment will be provided.
Students who are disruptive, disrespectful or not putting their full effort into the class will not be allowed to attend.
