Course description
Outline (Paragraph Writing):
The ability to autonomously deepen academic knowledge in university is nurtured through researching about a particular topic, analyzing the data, and writing and developing an argument around the topic. As such, this course aims to help students to learn the basic structure of a paragraph and to acquire skills for writing cohesively and coherently in English. The classes are formed according to the degree of students’ English proficiency and advancement. This course is offered as an introductory writing course in the English curriculum of Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology.
Expected Learning
Objectives (Paragraph Writing):
1) Students should understand the function of a topic sentence and how to structure a paragraph.
2) Students should understand how to write clearly and effectively with appropriate style.
3) Students should be able to use appropriate words and expressions to write with logical consistency.
4) Students should be able to identify appropriate support information for their paragraphs
and use transitions between sentences to connect ideas.

Course schedule
Class 1: Course introduction & writing level check
Class 2: Fluency writing practice. Review formatting guidelines and explain what plagiarism is. Go over common errors in writing.
Class 3: Fluency writing practice. The elements of a paragraph: Topic, supporting, and concluding sentences and the use of transitions.
Class 4: Fluency writing practice. Paragraph writing practice #1 (no references).
Class 5: Fluency writing practice. Revise with peer and teacher feedback and submit paragraph #1.
Class 6: Fluency writing practice. Review referencing guidelines. Practice writing with references.
Class 7: Fluency writing practice. Paragraph writing practice #2 (with references).
Class 8: Fluency writing practice. Revise with peer and teacher feedback and submit paragraph #2.
Class 9: Fluency writing practice. Paragraph writing practice #3 (with references).
Class 10: Fluency writing practice. Revise with peer and teacher feedback and submit paragraph #3.
Class 11: Final fluency writing practice. Writing paragraphs in emails: The difference between texts and emails.
Class 12: Email writing practice #1.
Class 13: Revise with peer and teacher feedback and submit email #1.
Class 14: Flex Day (preparing for final exam)

Prerequisites
This course carries 1 credit. In addition to 30 hours that students spend in the class, they are recommended to prepare for, and review, the classes using the textbook and the reference books, spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University for each class. Students must attend at least 2/3 of a course in order to receive credit for that course. If students do not fully attend the class for two times, it should be counted as one time of absence.
Required Text(s) and Materials
No textbook will be required for this course, but handouts will be provided in class. Students will need to bring to every class the following two materials: one B5 notebook for fluency writing practice and one A4 binder or folder to organize and easily access the handouts. If you have a laptop computer, please bring it to class.
References
A good dictionary will be essential in the course.
