Course description
Outline (English Discussion): This course aims to improve each student’s basic speaking fluency and ability to communicate in English, through the discussion of a variety of general topics as well as issues of academic interest.
This course is mandatory for first-year students as an introduction to the English curriculum of Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology.
Expected Learning
Objectives (English Discussion):
・ Students should participate in discussions on both general and academic topics, based on their own experiences and knowledge.
・ Students should develop the ability to listen actively and express their opinions without repeating or copying others.
・ Students should be able to understand and build on other conversations.
・ Students should develop the oral skills needed in a variety of academic contexts, such as group discussions, debates etc.

Class 2: Speaking fluency practice. Discussion skills: Asking questions and follow-up questions.
Class 3: Speaking fluency practice. Discussion skills: Extending answers and asking for clarification.
Class 4: Speaking fluency practice. Discussion skills: Backchannels and appropriate reactions.
Class 5: Speaking fluency practice. Discussion topic #1 practice.
Class 6: Speaking fluency practice. Discussion topic #2 practice.
Class 7: Speaking fluency practice. Discussion topic #3 practice.
Class 8: Speaking fluency practice. Discussion Review & midterm preparation.
Class 9: Summary and speaking midterm exam.
Class 10: Speaking fluency practice. Discussion skills: Paraphrasing and summarizing.
Class 11: Speaking fluency practice. Discussion topic #4 practice.
Class 12: Speaking fluency practice. Discussion topic #5 practice.
Class 13: Speaking fluency practice. Discussion topic #6 practice.
Class 14: Flex day - Discussion Review & final preparation.
Class 15: Summary and speaking final exam.
Prerequisites
This course carries 1 credit. In addition to 30 hours that students spend in the class, they are recommended to prepare for, and review, the classes using the textbook and the reference books, spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University for each class. Students must attend at least 2/3 of a course in order to receive credit for that course. If students do not fully attend the class for two times, it should be counted as one time of absence.
Required Text(s) and Materials
No textbook will be required for this course, but handouts will be provided in class. Students will need to bring to every class the following materials: all handouts from previous lessons and a binder or folder to organize and easily access the handouts.

A good dictionary will be essential in the course.
