Course description
The objective of this multidisciplinary course is to cultivate learners’ abilities to accomplish a task cooperatively with other students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. In the first part of the course, the students will learn theories and empirical research regarding culture and communication. Students will analyze and discuss how the former influence the latter and the types of communication problems that can arise between people who do not share a language and culture. The second part of the course entails group projects and presentations, where each group will apply the knowledge acquired in the lectures to deepen their understanding of the relation between culture and communication and then present their findings to their peers.
Expected Learning
・To analyze your own culture and recognize how cultural characteristics influence your communication.
・To interpret other cultures by comparing then with your own, and to adjust your communication styles in order to accomplish a task in cooperation with others from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

Course schedule
1. Analysis of culture: We will learn definitions, characteristics, and
categories of culture.
2. Influence of culture in daily life: We will discuss cultural
influences in our daily lives and identify possible problems in
intercultural communication as informed by knowledge acquired from
theories and empirical studies on culture and communication.
3. Stereotypes and discrimination: We will discuss what a stereotype
is and how it can lead to discrimination.
4. Analysis of communication: We will examine the process and elements
of communication, and then discuss factors that enhance and/or
disrupt communication..
5. Verbal communication: We will review the roles of verbal messages
and discuss what can happen between communicators who speak
different native languages.
6. Non-verbal communication: We will identify the roles of non-verbal
messages and discuss how they can facilitate and/or disrupt
intercultural communication.
7. How to convey messages: We will learn how cultural differences can
influence our communication styles on the basis of theories of high
context and low context culture.
8. Preparation for group work: Information will be provided regarding
the themes and schedule of the group projects. We will learn how to
complete tasks with others from different cultures and effective
ways to create a presentation to non-native speakers of English.
9-11: Group project: Each group will work to accomplish a given task.
12~13. Presentations: Each group will present their findings, which will be discussed by the class.
14. Feedback on the group project experiences: We will share successful and challenging aspects of the group work with the class.
15. Final discussion: Each student will show what is necessary for him/herself to effectively carry out intercultural communication.
Prerequisites
In addition to 30 hours you spend in the class, you are recommended to prepare for and review the classes, using the handouts provided, complete the group project and spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University for each class.
