Course description |
"Preliminary Seminars" is designed to help freshmen fit themselves to studies at university by providing bridging education. It is highly necessary to gain study principles and motivation at entrance to higher education. This course contains several multilateral approaches utilizing students to envisage quintessence of natural science and engineering. |
Expected Learning |
Introductory description of mechanical engineering will be given to enlighten freshmen toward significance of science, technology, engineering ethics. Guidance will be provided to various expertise in mechanical engineering. Mutual understanding between students and instructors will be enhanced through conversational interplay within groups with smaller members. * See the Curriculum maps. |
Course schedule |
1st week: General guidance. 2nd week: Lecture "To study in universities" - a big step toward wisdom - 3rd to 6th week: Laboratory tours. Freshmen are grouped into 10. Students visit three laboratories in each class, totally nine laboratories out of more than 30 on assigned schedule. In the 6th week, laboratories are open to student visitors who can freely choose the laboratories to visit. 7th week: Special alumni lectures. Two recommended alumni person will give special lectures to guide freshmen to real world profession and career building. 8th to 14th week: Thematic study. About 4 students are allocated to every laboratories of the MSE department to experience research activities. The receptive laboratories and their thematic study subjects are specified below in Remarks #1(from 1 to 16) and Remarks #2(from 17 to 31). 15th week: Concluding conference. Presentation will be given by students' groups based on laboratories of thematic studies to share and exchange views upon diverge research activities in the MSE department. |
Prerequisites |
In addition to 30hours that students spend in the class, students are recommended to prepare for and revise the lectures, spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University and using the lecture handouts. |

Assessment/Grading |
This course is obligatory, and students' attendance to each class will be checked. Submissions of assigned homework papers reporting what students acquire from lectures and laboratory tours. Merits 30 out of 100 is allocated to the positive participation to the class. Merits 10 out of 100 is accounted upon submitted reports. Remnant merits 60 out of 100 will be evaluated by the instructors in charge of each student's thematic study. |
