Course description |
Students will learn about physical chemistry becoming basic in biotechnology in this class. This class covers chemical equilibrium and electron transfer based on the thermodynamics and spectroscopies based on the quantum mechanics. |
Expected Learning |
Students who successfully complete this class will be able to: 1) Discuss chemical equilibrium, phenomena responsible for life, and biopolymer based on thermodynamics. 2) Recognize basic quantum mechanics and understand spectroscopies which is used for observation of biomolecules. This subject corresponds to the viewpoint A of the diploma policy. |
Course schedule |
Week 1: Orientation of this class. Reviewing thermodynamics. Week 2: Phase equilibria 1 (Chapter 3) Learning phase, phase transition, and phase diagram. Week 3: Phase equilibria 2 (Chapter 3) Learning ideal solutions, Raoult’s law, ideal-dilute solutions, and Henry’s law. Week 4: Phase equilibria 3 (Chapter 3) Understanding phase transitions in biopolymers and of biological membranes and chemical potential. Week 5: Phase equilibria 4 (Chapter 3) Understanding the real solutions, activity, and colligative properties. Week 6: Chemical equilibrium 1 (Chapter 4) Learning the reaction Gibbs energy, chemical equilibrium, the equilibrium constant. Week 7: Chemical equilibrium 2 (Chapter 4) Understanding Le Chatelier’s principle and bioenergetics. Week 8: Chemical equilibrium 3 (Chapter 4) Understanding acids and bases, proton transfer equilibria, and buffer solutions. Week 9: Midterm examination Week 10: Some comments about the midterm examination Week 11: Thermodynamics of ion and electron transport 1 (Chapter 5) Understanding transport of ions across biological membranes and redox reactions. Week 12: Thermodynamics of ion and electron transport 2 (Chapter 5) Understanding standard potentials and electron transfer in bioenergetics. Week 13: Biochemical spectroscopy 1 (Chapter 12) Reviewing quantum mechanics. Learning vibrational spectroscopies (IR and Raman). Week 14: Biochemical spectroscopy 2 (Chapter 12) Learning ultraviolet and visible absorption spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. Week 15: Final examination |
Prerequisites |
Students entering this class are assumed to have had “Thermodynamics” and “Basic quantum mechanics”. This class leads to “Biophysical chemistry II” and “Bio-related electronics”. In addition to 30 hours that students spend in the class, students are recommended to prepare for and revise the lectures, spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University by reviewing the exercises to be done in each lesson and by solving the problems at the end of the text. |

Grades will be assigned based on students' performance on examination, quizzes, and reports. Midterm examination; 35%, final examination; 55%, and quizzes and reports; 10%. |
