Course description
In the Organic Chemistry in Life Science II, you will learn the characters and reactivities of functional groups in organic compounds. Since the characters of functional groups in organic compound are closely related to the reactivity of the organic compounds, then you will understand the variety of reactions occurring in vivo throughout the course, which is categorized as a basic subject of life science.
In this course, properties and reactivity of alcohols, ethers and carboxylic acids are addressed. In addition, you will learn stability and reactivity of aromatic compounds from the viewpoint of aromaticity. In each lecture, quiz-type home work is assigned which is related to the contents of the lecture. Through this course, you will learn about the electron arrows to understand the reaction.
Expected Learning
1) Understand the properties of alcohols, ethers, carboxylic acids and explain their reactivity using electron arrows.
2) Aromaticity and its reactivity can be explained by using electron arrows.

This subject corresponds to the viewpoint A of the diploma policy.

References
Bruce Organic Chemistry (Kagaku-Dojin), McMurry Organic Chemistry (Tokyo Kagaku-Dojin) and other texts will be introduced in the course.
Assessment/Grading
Evaluation will be made based on the results of the report (20%) and the final exam (80%).
Message from instructor(s)
To understand the reaction and properties of organic chemistry, understanding electron arrows is very important. I will check and return the submitted home-work with some comments, especially focusing on the electron arrow. Please review carefully and use these occasions for understanding the contents in the course.
