Course description |
Thermodynamics and statistical mechanics are highly related and are fundamentals for understanding physical and chemical phenomena. This course will place a premium on understanding their close relationship. |
Expected Learning |
Learners who complete this course will be able to: ・describe the first and second law of thermodynamics ・describe heat engine ・understand the behavior of many particle systems ・describe the partition function for each of the statistical ensembles |
Course schedule |
This course provides students with the fundamentals for thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. The first part of this course will address the fundamentals for thermodynamics, while that of the second part will address those for statistical mechanics. The first and second laws of thermodynamics and statistical ensembles will be main subjects in the first and second part of this course, respectively. The topic addressed in each week is given as follows: 1. Thermodynamics and statistical mechanics 2. Head and temperature 3. The first law of thermodynamics 4. The second law of thermodynamics1 5. The second law of thermodynamics2 6. Thermodynamic potentials 7. Introduction to statistical mechanics 8. Microcanonical ensemble1 9. Microcanonical ensemble2 10. Microcanonical ensemble3 11. Canonical ensemble1 12. Canonical ensemble2 13. Other statistical (thermodynamic) ensembles 14. Statistical mechanics and molecular simulation 15. Summary (examination) |
Prerequisites |
Students who are registered to this course are expected to have a basic knowledge of calculus. |
