Course description |
This course provides students with microbial and pathogenic characteristics of insect pathogens and microbial control of insect pests. |
Expected Learning |
To be able to understand and discuss the characteristics of insect pathogens, techniques for diagnosis of insect diseases, pathogenesis of insect diseases, and development of fungi and insect viruses as microbial insecticides. Lectured by Dr Sato 1) About natural enemies. Overview: taxonomy of fungi and positioning of entomopathogenic fungi. 2) Overview: general process of fungal infections on insects and the insect defense systems. 3) Overview: biology and general life cycles of entomopathogenic fungi. 4) Specifics: characteristics and life cycles of major species of entomogenous Entomophthorales. 5) Specifics: characteristics and life cycles of major species of "Cordyceps". 6) Specifics: characteristics and life cycles of major species of entomogenous anamorphic Ascomycete. 7) Specifics: Diversity of interaction between fungi and insects 8) Advantages of insect pathogens in pest control. 9) Advantages and disadvantages of fungi as a biocontrol agent compared with other entomopathogens. 10) Examples of fungi for microbial control of pest insects. Field tour for finding insects killed by fungi, and isolation of fungal pathogens. Dr Sato: Final report will be evaluated as 100%. Dr Nakai: Daily class comments/questions and reports will be evaluated as 8:2, respectively. Each instructors evaluation occupies 1:1 of total evaluation. |
