Course description
This course is designed for the students who have little or no experience of studying Japanese. It helps learners acquire basic communication skills needed in Japanese academic life during their stay in Japan. The participants are also expected to learn general knowledge about Japan and skills for further Japanese study. The course includes group work and activities to share their thoughts and experiences in Japanese.
Expected Learning
1. To acquire basic understanding of Japanese sentence structure, vocabulary and discourse patterns which enable them to carry out everyday conversation.
2. To understand general knowledge about Japan
Competency development: Communication skills, Intercultural understanding, Presentation skills
Course schedule
1. Writing system (Hiragana and Katakana)
2. Introducing oneself or others / Noun sentences, question sentences
3. Buying things at stores / Verb sentences in the polite form
4. Asking for something at the restaurant / Verb sentences, structure particles
5. Asking the whereabouts of the thing or people / Expressions of existence
6. Asking about unknown words, Expression of request /

Prerequisites
This course carries 1 credit. In addition to 30 hours you spend in the class, and 10 hours in completing the essay task and presentation preparation, you are expected to prepare for, and review, the classes spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University for each class, using the handouts and the reference books specified below.
