Course description
This class will be held by two lecturers (Professor Masahisa Wada, Professor Takanori Imai). Students who want to take a credit of this class should receive both lectures. The grade will be determined after averaging the evaluations by both lecturers. Prof. Wada will give lectures on cellulose and cellulosic materials. The lecture by Prof. Imai is focused on the wood extractives.
Expected Learning
To understand the basic knowledge of solid structure of cellulose and other polysaccharides, and also of wood extractives.
Course schedule
Prof. Wada will give lectures on the structure, and property of cellulose, as well as the introduction of cellulosic materials.
1) Biosynthesis, primary structure, and microfibril of cellulose
2) Solid-state structure and polymorphism of cellulose
3) Thermal expansion and thermal decomposition of cellulose
4) Dissolution, regeneration, and derivatization of cellulose
5) Enzymatic hydrolysis and synthesis of cellulose
6) Solid-state structure and polymorphism of chitin
7) Physical properties of chitin
8) Crystalline transition between hydrate and anhydrous forms of polysaccharides
9) Review

Prof. Imai is going to give lectures on the wood extractives, and heartwood formation as follows:
10) Characteristics of extractives derived from trees
11) Characteristics of extractives derived from trees
12) Distribution of extractives in trees (sapwood and heartwood)
13) Accumulation of extractives during heartwood formation
14) Biosynthesis of extractives during heartwood formation
15) Review
