Course description |
In this class, students learn the epidemiology, etiology, and conventional treatments (surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy) of various kinds of neoplastic diseases in domestic animals, especially dogs and cats. |

Veterinary Clinical Oncology 1. Diagnosing cancer 1) Carcinogenic risk factors 2) Diagnostic evaluation of cancers with a complete blood count and blood chemistry tests 3) Diagnostic imaging tests for cancers ① X-ray ② Ultrasound ③ Computed tomography (CT) scan ④ Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) ⑤ Nuclear medicine imaging 2. Cancer staging 1) Clinical staging 2) The TNM staging system 3) Clinical stages of representative tumors (mammary tumors, skin tumors, mast cell tumors, oral tumors) 3. Surgical technique 1) Surgery as the treatment choice 2) Theoretical and practical pros and cons 3) Indications for surgical treatment 4) Surgical margins 4. Radiation therapy 1) Biologic principles of radiation therapy 2) Radiosensitibity of normal tissues and tumors 3) Radiation therapy devices 4) Conventional fractionated radiotherapy 5) Indications for radiation therapy 6) Combination of radiotherapy and other treatments 7) Radiation injuries 5. Chemotherapy 1) Principles of chemotherapy and its indications and limitations 2) Commonly used chemotherapy drugs 3) Cancer chemotherapy resistance 4) Chemotherapy for malignant lymphoma |
