Course description
[Objectives] Plants related to agriculture, forestry and environmental conservation need to be protected from pathogens, pests, weeds, weather disasters, harmful substances, etc. and cultivated healthy. To that end, not only safety for the human body but also control and management technologies that do not impair the diversity of ecosystems and biodiversity must be established and applied. In this lecture, we will outline the basic concept of plant protection and administration, control and management techniques of plant pathogenic microorganisms, pests, weeds, etc., pesticides and biocontrol agents used there, and new technologies.
This lecture is a class by teachers with practical experience. Yogo has the practical experience of the Food Safety Commission, etc., Arie has the academic experience committee for the application of the first-class use regulations for genetically modified organisms, etc. To educate people about the importance of plant protection and the importance of science communication in society.
Expected Learning
Understand the basic concept and administration of plant protection, control and management techniques for plant pathogenic microorganisms, pests, weeds, etc., drugs and microorganisms used there, as well as new technologies.
Preparing for and reviewing in accordance with the standard hours of the university, using 30 hours of lesson time and the above-mentioned extra-learning time, as well as textbooks distributed in class and materials posted on HP and moodle.

As a viewpoint of the diploma policy, please refer to the following curriculum map of HPU (Three Policies).

Course schedule
Class plan:
The lecture will be conducted by ten faculty members and a part-time lecturer (Dr. Kazuhiro Takagi) .
Partial intensive courses.

Outline of each class (R1 course status. Schedule of R2 will be announced around August 2020)

October 5 (Fri) Masahiro Natsume (until 16:30)
・ Masahiro Natsume:
(1) Introduction to plant protection,
(2) Chemical control II-Consider plant protection from both chemical and biological perspectives-For chemical control, outline the history, origin, mechanism of action and selectivity of pesticides, and the merit of pesticides.

October 12 (Fri) Kawaide Takahiro and Kasahara Hiroyuki (until 17:15)
・ Kuide Kawade: A study of plant protection by regulating hormones and antibiotics produced by plants themselves. The current status of research on the molecular mechanism of biosynthesis of phytoalexin, which is synthesized by plants when exposed to stress, will be discussed in relation to plant hormones and the growth control mechanism of plant hormones in plant protection.
・ Hiroyuki Kasahara: Plant protection and plant hormones
This paper reviews the molecular mechanisms of plant heat and drought, diseases caused by soil bacteria, and invasion of parasitic plants, focusing on plant hormones, and discusses ways to solve them.

October 19 (Fri) Madoka Nakai and Maki Inoue (until 17:15)
・ Madoka Nakai: An example of biological control
Introduce examples of biological control using baculovirus, a natural enemy of insects. Explains the production and control methods of virus preparations, and discusses factors and problems related to the success or failure of control.
・ Maki Inoue: Use of useful organisms in agriculture
The problems surrounding pollinating insects and biological control materials used in agriculture, especially the accompanying introduction of pathogenic microorganisms and ecological effects on non-target organisms, will be introduced.

October 26 (Fri) Toshiyuki Fukuhara, Hiromitsu Moriyama (until 17:15)
・ Toshiyuki Fukuhara: RNA interference mechanism as a plant defense system
Outline the defense mechanism of virus infection by RNA interference in plants. We will also introduce the results of research on plant protection in Arabidopsis thaliana.
・ Yumitsu Moriyama: Overview and applied research of mycoviruses that infect plant pathogens
Infection of plant pathogens with mycovirus may weaken the pathogenicity of host bacteria (attenuation phenomenon). The outline and the applied research examples as a new biological control material are introduced.

November 2nd (Friday / holiday) Takeshi Komatsu and Takeshi Arie (until 17:15)
・ Arie Tsutomu: How to prevent plant diseases? -Environmental impact and food safety-
To deepen the understanding of chemical, cultivation, physical and biological methods of plant disease control, and discuss ways to stably produce safe foods while reducing environmental impact.
・ Ken Komatsu: Current status and issues of diagnosis and control of plant viruses
To deepen the understanding of the characteristics of plant viruses, and discuss the latest diagnostic methods such as immunochromatography, and the methods of infection prevention and control, including the latest knowledge on the development of attenuated viruses.

November 9 (Fri) ※ School Festival Closed

November 16 (Fri) Takashi Hiraoka (until 16:30)
・ Takashi Hiraoka: Pollen transmission by insects-mainly on bees-
An overview of pollen transmission by insects, and the usefulness and problems at the present time are explained, with an example of how bees are usefully used in agriculture in Japan.
