Course description |
Students will learn the basic vocabulary and grammar and the basic communicative skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) of Spanish. Toward this goal, students need to take both “Spanish I” and “Spanish II” in the same year. This course is offered as the first part of the two-part Spanish language course of the Global Language and Cultural Studies. |
Expected Learning |
Learners who successfully complete this course will be able to: 1. have basic conversations concerning daily life. 2. read and write elementary sentences based on the solid lexical and grammatical knowledge of Spanish. 3. have basic knowledge of the Spanish language and the Hispanic world. Week 1 Course Guidance. Lesson 1: Orthography and pronunciation。 Week 2 Lesson 2 Grammar: Nouns. Articles. Conversation (greetings). Week 3 Lesson 2 Grammar: Subjective pronouns. Verb “ser”. Conversation (self-introduction). Week 4 Lesson 3 Grammar: Adjectives. Possessive adjectives. Reading and composition (family) Week 5 Lesson 3 Grammar: Negation and questions. Verb "tener". Conversation (family) Week 6 Lesson 4 Grammar: Present indicative of regular verbs. Conversation (daily activities) Week 7 Lesson 4 Grammar: Preposisitons. Interrogatives. Reading and composition (daily activities) Week 8 Lesson 5 Grammar: Demonstratives. Conversation (physical conditions) Week 9 Lesson 5 Grammar: Verb "hay" and "estar". Reading and composition (town) Week 10 Lesson 6 Grammar: Present indicative of irregular verbs. Conversation (weekly schedule) Week 11 Lesson 6 Grammar: Time and dates. Reading and composition (weekly schedule) Week 12 Lesson 7 Grammar: Stem-changing verbs I. Conversation (request & offer) Week 13 Lesson 7 Grammar: Weather. Direct object pronouns. Reading and composition (plan) Week 14 Review Week 15 Summary and Final Exam The course may be adapted to the degree of understanding of the students. |
Prerequisites |
It is desirable to take the classes of “Spanish II” and “Spanish for Intercultural Understsanding” to acquire comprehensively the basic skill of the language. Students are recommended to spend 45 minutes in preparing for each class, and another 45 minutes in completing assignments and revising the class. |
