| Course description |
| This intensive course is one of the subjects for "International Agricultural Science" and "AIMS Program" and provides basic theories and outdoor practical exercise of charcoal making (biomass carbonization). (But this year, AIMS Program is canceled due to COVID-19 outbreaks.) Participants learn how to make charcoal (biochar) from bamboo and agricultural residues, then, share and exchange the ideas on how to use charcoal for agricultural development and environmental conservation in participants' countries. |

1) To understand the basic theories and skills of charcoal making. 2) to exchange ideas on charcoal application for improving agriculture and environment in home countries. On Saturday, October 3rd, 2020 at Field Museum Tsukui (TUAT Tsukui Farm), Sagamihara City (9:00 to 12:30) 1. Agrowaste and local biomass 2. Pit kiln: Making charcoal from bamboo and mulberry branches 3. Drum kiln and Iwate kiln: Structure and working process 4. Chimney-standing device for making rice husk/sawdust charcoal 5. Challenges for smoke-less charcoal making. On Saturday, October 10, 2020 at Fuchu Campus, Room 2N-402 (10:00 to 12:30) 6. (Lecture) TUAT's Charcoal Project in Vietnam 7-8. (Group work and discussion) How can we apply charcoal technology for rural livelihoods and environmental conservation? |
| Prerequisites |

Participants need to register the Google Classroom (class code: yig3ns3) and send e-mail to the instructor (Oikawa: ft9253@go.tuat.ac.jp) by September 25, 2020. Each participant needs about JPY 2,000 for a round trip from Fuchu to FM Tsukui (PASMO and SUICA are available for trains and buses). Please prepare own lunch and drink. Participants are requested to take field notes during the course and sufficiently review for writing an assignment report. |
