Course description

The objective of this course is to develop communication skills and to learn basic Kanji for everyday life in Japan. Students are expected to learn everyday conversations and Japanese culture with a variety of multimedia materials. They are also expected to acquire basic knowledge of Kanji and to learn how to use Kanji through various class activities.

Expected Learning

1. To develop everyday conversational skills and Japanese cultural skills. 2. To acquire basic knowledge of Kanji and the usage of Kanji. Competency development: Communication skills, Intercultural understanding, Presentation skills

Course schedule

1. General knowledge of Kanji: four categories of Kanji, basic strokes, rules of stroke order, components of Kanji, radicals (Basic) 2. General knowledge of Kanji: four categories of Kanji, basic strokes, rules of stroke order, components of Kanji, radicals (Application combining basic radicals) 3．Writing and reading exercises of Kanji (approximately 100 Kanji)　＃1-100 4. Writing and reading exercises of Kanji (approximately 100 Kanji)　＃101-200 5. Rewriting short sentences using Kanji　(Basic) 6. Rewriting short sentences using Kanji (Application) 7. Mid-term Examination Activities focusing on Pictographic characters 8. Activities focusing on Sign characters 9. Activities focusing on Ideographic characters 10. Tasks to learn Kanji in daily life (Basic) 11. Tasks to learn Kanji in daily life (Application) 12. Using web-based tools and electronic dictionaries for searching Kanji 13. Activities using online learning tools 14. Japanese calligraphy 15. Final Examination 　　Presentation

Prerequisites

This course carries 1 credit. In addition to 30 hours you spend in the class, and 10 hours in completing the essay task and presentation preparation, you are expected to prepare for, and review, the classes spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University for each class, using the handouts and the reference books specified below.
