Course description |
The objective of this multidisciplinary course is to cultivate learners’ abilities to accomplish a task cooperatively with other students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. In the first part of the course, the students will learn theories and empirical research regarding culture and communication. Students will analyze and discuss how the former influence the latter and the types of communication problems that can arise between people who do not share a language and culture. The second part of the course entails group projects and presentations, where each group will apply the knowledge acquired in the lectures to deepen their understanding of the relation between culture and communication and then present their findings to their peers. |
Expected Learning |
・To analyze your own culture and recognize how cultural characteristics influence your communication. ・To interpret other cultures by comparing then with your own, and to adjust your communication styles in order to accomplish a task in cooperation with others from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Prerequisites |
In addition to 30 hours you spend in the class, you are required to submit a reaction paper for each class, and recommended to review the classes, using the handouts provided. |
