Course description |
This course aims to develop minds for knowledge creation and autonomous learning, and is designed as an introductory course for the Liberal Arts and Fundamental Studies. Students will experience different styles of lectures and classes depending on the contents. It consists of two parts. Part I : Common Introductory Program In this program that is common to all first-year students, students will learn about our university and think how they would pursue their academic life here. The university history and TUAT principals are described as well as our research activities, with the aim of encouraging students to engage in university study and to understanding the importance of designing their individual university life. Part II : Faculty-Specific Program This lecture aims to help freshmen acquire fundamental skills for scientific and engineering expert through basic and topical experiments related to physics, chemistry and scientific measurement which are fundamental for Mechanical Systems Engineering. |
Expected Learning |
1) To understand the autonomous learning in the University, and be able to design individual's academic life at University from broad perspectives. 2) To aquire skills to conduct basic experiments, logically consider experimental results, survey knowledge, write a report and make a presentation. Part I : Common Introductory Program 1. About the University (I) Talks from the President, the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, and the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. 2. Our Initiative for Society (First half) Global warming and emission of green house gas. Our effort in reducing CO2 emission. (Second half) TUAT Plastic 5R Campus-Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Renewable, Research. Our teaching and research activities in finding the solutions and educating future generations. 3. Studying at the University (First half) Differences between studying at high school and studying at university. Designing your academic life at the University from broad perspectives, with a systematic approach in mind in taking lectures and studying abroad. (Second half) Identity development and academic life: Challenges experienced in adolescence. 4. Research ethics Code of conduct for research integrity, and scientific misconducts. Falsification, fabrication, and plagiarism are discussed. 5. Campus tour to visit the University's facilities Students visit the Nature and Science Museum of the University and other facilities. Part II : Faculty-Specific Program 6. Orientation for experiments and safety training 7. Research ethics and writing reports 8. Experiment : pendulum movement and gravity 9. Experiment : data mining 10. Training of writing reports 11. Experiment : burglar sensors 12. Experiment : vernier caliper, micrometer 13. Experiment : fuel cells 14. Lecture for presentation 15. Prerequisites |
Part I : In addition to 10 hours you spend in the class, you are recommended to review the classes spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University for each class, to plan out the courses to take and design how you would pursue your academic activities ahead. Part II : This is a required subject for graduation. In addition to 60 hours that students spend in the class, students are recommended to prepare for the experiments, reports and presentation, spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University and using the lecture note and references specified below. |

Part I (16%): Marks are given based on worksheets collected at the end of each class. Part II (84%): Learning attitudes: 40%, Experimental activity: 10 %, Oral examination: 10%, Reports and presentation: 40% |
Message from instructor(s) |
We highly recommend that students actively participate in the experiment course. Before conducting each experiment, students must study backgrounds and theories of the experiments by reading the instruction text and other materials. Preparation and clearance for experimental materials after conducting experiments are also required. |
