The purpose of this lecture is to consider the characteristics and the establishing process of the civilization, which appeared in Japan in the Edo era. Recently, this civilization has attracted attention as a recycling-based civilization, and it has been said that it will be one of the important analysis subjects in considering the environmental history of Japan. In this class, I’d like to think about the features of Japanese traditional culture and society, following the establishing process of this civilization. This course is offered as one of the Humanities and Socical Sciences courses of the Global Liberal Arts Studies. |
| Expected Learning |

1. To feel historical perspective as one of the methodology of Social Sciences and Humanities that aims to rethink our living times, society and civilization by combining spatial relative assessment and timewise relative assessment. 2. To develop historical perspective as one of Liberal Arts subjects that aim to consider, feel and re-experience things from different viewpoints through the eyes of people who come from other regions, civilizations and so on. 3. To be able to understand the characteristics of the Japanese traditional culture and the process how they were formed in the context of world history. You might think that these subjects above will be made clear by analyzing the Japanese history in the era. But it’s a misunderstanding. To make them clear, we need to expand our views into the relationships between Japan and Asia, or between Japan and the West in those days. In fact, the civilization of the Edo era was formed related with those world situations in those days. The attainment target of this class is to understand the process how Japanese traditional culture and society were formed through relations to those world situations. The structure of this lecture will be as follows. Introduction ?the characteristics of Japanese civilization in the Edo era- (1st, 2nd classes) Ⅰ The position of the civilization of the Edo era in world history (3rd class) Ⅱ The establishment of traditional societies in Asia and the large era of development in Japan 1 The world and sea of East Asia in the 14-15th century (4th class) 2 The Asian trade area and the West in the 15th century (5th-7th classes) 3 The Asian trade area and silver in the 16th century (8th, 9th classes) 4 The upheaval of the Asian trade area and its frontiers in the 16th century (10th, 11th classes) 5 Japan as a frontier and the Asian trade world in the 16th century (12th, 13th classes) 6 Japan and the world in the 17th century (14th class) In conclusion -the characteristics and the development of the civilization of the Edo era- (15th class) |

| n addition to 30 hours you spend in the class and ~15 hours required to complete assignments, you are recommended to prepare for and review the classes, spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University for each class. |

| Assessment/Grading |
| The grade will be carried out by report (approximately 80%) and “the comment card”. I will ask the attendances to answer the lecturer’s questions and write your comments on them. However, these cards aren’t the attendance cards. Submission of the card isn’t mandatory (It’s optional). The lecturer will select interesting cards among them and introduce them in the next class. If “the comment card” is adopted, the submitter can be added points. |
