Course description |
The ability to autonomously deepen academic knowledge in university is nurtured through researching about a particular topic, analyzing the data, and writing and developing an argument around the topic. As such, this course aims to help students to learn the basic structure of a paragraph and to acquire skills for writing cohesively and coherently in English. The classes are formed according to the degree of students’ English proficiency and advancement. This course is offered as an introductory writing course in the English curriculum of Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology. |
Expected Learning |
1) Students should understand the function of a topic sentence and how to structure a paragraph. 2) Students should understand how to write clearly and effectively with appropriate style. 3) Students should be able to use appropriate words and expressions to write with logical consistency. 4) Students should be able to identify appropriate support information for their paragraphs and use transitions between sentences to connect ideas. Prerequisites |
This course carries 1 credit. In addition to 30 hours that students spend in the class, they are recommended to prepare for, and review, the classes using the textbook and the reference books, spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University for each class. Students must attend at least 2/3 of a course in order to receive credit for that course. If students do not fully attend the class for two times, it should be counted as one time of absence. |

Assessment/Grading |
Class participation (20%): Class attendance and participation to class discussion and group work are evaluated. Tasks given in class (80%): Students are assessed whether they understood the lecture contents, and whether they can compose various paragraphs with logical consistency in English via various assignments: quizzes/tests, homework, term papers, and a final examination. |
