Course description
Students will learn the basic vocabulary and grammar and the basic communicative skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) of Spanish. Toward this goal, students need to take both “Spanish I” and “Spanish II” in the same year.

This course is offered as the first part of the two-part Spanish language course of the Global Language and Cultural Studies.
Expected Learning
Learners who successfully complete this course will be able to:
1. have basic conversations concerning daily life.
2. read and write elementary sentences based on the solid lexical and grammatical knowledge of Spanish.
3. have deeper knowledge of the Spanish language and the Hispanic world.

Week 2 Lesson 8 Grammar: Verbs (oir, venir, saber, and conocer). Indirect object pronouns. Conversation (Shopping)
Week 3 Lesson 8 Grammar: Verbs (dar, decir, and traer). Reading and composition (clothes)
Week 4 Lesson 9 Grammar: Reflexive verbs I. Conversation (daily life)
Week 5 Lesson 9 Grammar: Reflexive verbs II. Reading and composition (daily life)
Week 6 Lesson 10 Grammar: Verb "gustar". Conversation (preferences)
Week 7 Lesson 10 Grammar: Possessive pronouns. Reading and composition (preferences)
Week 8 Lesson 11 Grammar: Comparatives and superlatives. Conversation (evaluation)
Week 9 Lesson 11 Grammar: Indefinite and negative words. Exclamation. Reading and composition (evaluation)
Week 10 Lesson 12 Grammar: Indicative preterite of regular verbs. Reading (past events)

The course can be adapted to the degree of understanding of the students.
Prerequisites
It is desirable to take the classes of “Spanish II” and “Spanish for Intercultural Understsanding” to acquire comprehensively the basic skill of the language.
Students are recommended to spend 45 minutes in preparing for each class, and another 45 minutes in completing assignments and revising the class.

Students absent more than five times are not qualified to take the final exam.
