Course description
Purpose: A goal of this lecture is understanding the theoretical principles and analytical methods of scientific instruments, which are frequently used in the area of inorganic chemistry.
Summary: Since the high-level and accurate chemical analysis are needed by the development of chemistry day by day, variety of intrumental analyses are applied in the wide area of chemical science. In this lecture, we will study about X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, scanning probe microscopy, and spectroscopic analysis.
Expected Learning
(1) Systematically understand the principles of X-ray generation, crystal structure identification by thin-film X-ray diffraction and powder X-ray diffraction.
(2) Understanding the surface analysis, elemental analysis, and emission analysis using electron microscopes and scanning probe microscopes.
(3) Understanding of the interaction between electromagnetic waves and substances in spectroscopic analysis. Systematically understanding of all analytical methods using light.

Prerequisites
The course will proceed assuming that students understand the contents of the lectures on physical chemistry and inorganic chemistry that were opened by the fourth semester of the second grade.

In addition to 30 hours that students spend in the class, students are recommended to prepare for
and review the lectures, spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University and
using the lecture handouts as well as the references specified below.

Materials will be distributed as needed. In addition, PowerPoint files used in the lecture will be released from the Moodle system. However, due to copyright issues, it is used only for personal learning and duplication or distribution is prohibited.

Attitude (10%), midterm report (10%), and term-end exam (80%). Details on the midterm report will be explained during the course.

Chemistry of instrumental analysis is very important discipline area because it sustain the present scientific industry. Especially, if you work in the company concerning chemistry, there are a lot of opportunities to use these instruments. Thus, not only the knowledges of chemistry but also physics are needed and important.
