To perform our own research, we often gain necessary knowledge and useful techniques of related research from scientific articles. The aim of this course is to improve reading comprehension ability of English scientific articles related to applied chemistry and materials and presentation skills, it is required every time to make a presentation of the contents understood from an English article as an assignment. It should be noted that students are divided into a small groups with 5 - 7 members and attend a lecture by a different teaching stuff every week. Students must receive an article two weeks before each lecture and prepare to give a full presentation. In some cases, submission of the summary is required in advance. |

The standard of the course is to understand a series of contents of English scientific articles related to applied chemistry and materials, such as background, objective, experimental, results, discussion, and conclusion. Corresponding criteria in the Diploma Policy: See the Curriculum maps. |
| Course schedule |
|
[1st Lecture] Explanation of this lecture (aim, procedure, grouping, schedule, and so on) [2nd - 6th Lecture (intensive course)] Attending in the progress report of graduation work: a research content of laboratory can be learned. It is desirable to debate with teaching stuff and/or senior students. The schedule time is separately configured as an intensive course. [7th Lecture] Explanation of graduation work: how to assign to laboratory groups. [8th Lecture] Meeting for the placement of graduation work: the placement will be determined. [9th - 15th Lecture] Group learning: a presentation of the contents understood from an English article as an assignment is made. Teaching stuff checks the student's comprehension of the article through a question and answer. Background of researches and expressive style of English articles can be learned. |

This course is a compulsory subject. It is desirable to take almost all the courses until the 3rd year in the department . In completing this course, students will spend the standard amount of time as specified by the University. |

| Students are assessed from 1) attitude at each lecture, 2) comprehension and 3) achievement of the assignments. |

| In this lecture, students are divided into a small group (5-7 persons) and attend a lecture by a different teaching stuff every week. There is no sense of only translating the English article into Japanese. It is important to understand contents of the English article from related textbooks and/or references. It is possible to improve your ability to read and understand English scientific articles by using this opportunity. Ask teaching stuffs in charge if you have questions. |
