Course description |
Polymer materials are indispensable for our daily life. This course will provide the basics of polymer synthesis via step-growth polymerization, polymer reactions such as functional-group transformations, cross-linkage, degradation, and recycle, and an overview of functional polymer materials. |
Expected Learning |
Students will acquire the knowledge for the polymer synthesis via step-growth polymerization and polymer reactions and a foundation in developing new functional polymer materials. This course would be essential for better understanding of “Physics of Polymers and Texiles I and II”. For the curriculum policy perspective of this course, please refer to the curriculum map in the Faculty of Engineering Course Guide. |
Course schedule |
This course will cover Chapters 6, (mainly Section 2, 4-3, 4-4, 5-1, and 6), 7, and 8 in the text. The approximate order of topics to be covered and examination is given below. [Weeks 1 and 2] Chapter 6, Section 2-1: Polycondensation General features, polymerization methods, kinetics and rates of polymerization, molecular weight, control of first-order structure, and characteristics of the obtained polymers [Weeks 3 and 4] Chapter 6, Section 2-2: Polyaddition General features, polymerization methods, and characteristics of the obtained polymers [Week 5] Chapter 6, Section 2-3: Addition-condensation polymerization General features, polymerization methods, and characteristics of the obtained polymers [Weeks 6 and 7] Chapter 6, Section 4-3: Chain-growth condensation polymerization General features, polymerization mechanism, and control of first-order structure Chapter 6, Section 4-4: Addition-condensation polymerization General features and polymerization methods [Week 8] Summary Midterm exam [Weeks 9 and 10] Chapter 7, Section 1: Functional-group transformations Reactivity of macromolecules, Reaction between macromolecules and low-molecular-weight compounds, Inter- and intramolecular reactions of macromolecules [Weeks 11 and 12] Chapter 7, Section 2: Cross-linkage of macromolecules Gelation, thermal- and light-curing reactions, and physical cross-linking [Week 13] Chapter 7, Section 4: Degradation and recycle of polymers Cross-linkage of macromolecules Thermal degradation, photolytic degradation, biodegradation, and chemical recycle [Week 14] Supplementary information [Week 15] Summary Final exam. |
