Course description
To prevail in the marketplace, technology is critical for managers of manufacturing companies. But even the best technology is of no value if it cannot be connected to a business, in other words, if it cannot lead to innovation. The priority is first to understand what the market wants, and then develop great technology which both responds to those needs and outdoes the competition. Another role of technology is to give birth to as yet unformed markets. Technology one develops turns into a business only when it takes shape and is launched effectively into the market. It is this series of initiatives that constitute technology management - management designed to innovate.
This course is designed for beginners, the intent being to provide an overview of the nature of technology management in manufacturing companies, as well as learning the concepts and methodologies of technology management via lectures and group exercises. The syllabus is as follows.
1. What does it mean to stimulate innovation based on technology (connect technology to business)?
2. Corporate vision, and the way of approaching and proceeding with developing business strategy
3. Leveraging logic models to express strategy
4. Program management
5. Organizational management and communication
6. Exercises in researching companies and presentations by groups

This course is offered as one of the courses in the Global Integrated Studies, and is taught by a professor with real-world experience. The teacher gained experience in being responsible for technology management through involvement in R&D, marketing, quality management, and intellectual property as an executive at a major food company.
Expected Learning
1. Be able to understand an overview of technology management, as well as the core tenets of developing management strategy, technology development, and program management.
2. Be able to analyze manufacturing company technology management, identify issues, and propose strategies.
3. Be able to leverage logic models to express technology strategies.
4. Through group exercises, learn to be able to think objectively, engage in discussions while communicating, and derive meaningful outcomes.
5. Be able to make concise and effective presentations.

Course schedule

1st day:
#1 Guidance and overview of technology management: In the guidance section, we will explain the structure of the course and how we will proceed. In the overview section, we will present the history of technology management, and discuss the importance of technology management in manufacturing companies via case studies.
#2 Framework for strategy development: We will present tools such as PPM, 3C, SWOT, and logic models, and the methodologies for formulating strategy proposals.
#3 Formulation of technology management strategy and practice exercises: We will present evaluation of manufacturing companies and the approach and procedure for formulating technology management strategies based on case studies. Presenting multiple themes for research on companies in group exercises, with one theme to be assigned to each group of multiple individuals. Two of those themes will be the technology strategies of Ajinomoto Corporation and Lion Corporation, from which our guest lecturers come.
2nd day:
#4 Program Management: We will learn about methodologies such as PEMBOK and P2M, and present approaches to promoting technology management.
#5 Running an organization and group presentations on two issues: We will present platform management as a way to promote collaboration and management for connecting research to business, based on case studies. The group presentations will involve two groups analyzing Ajinomoto Corporation’s technology management strategy and proposing future technology strategies.
#6 Guest lectures: We have invited the former director and head of the food research institute from Ajinomoto Corporation to provide comments on the presentations as well as a lecture on technology management, with time for Q&A.
3rd day:
#7 Group presentations. Four groups will analyze company technology management strategies and present their ideas for future technology management, followed by an overall discussion of the presentations.
#8 Group presentations and guest lecture: Two groups will analyze the technology management strategy of Lion Corporation and present their ideas on future technology strategy. We have invited the Executive Vice President of Lion Corporation, who heads up R&D, to provide comments on the presentations as well as a lecture on technology management, followed by time for Q&A.
Prerequisites
In addition to twelve hours of lectures, fifteen hours of preparation and review using reference texts.
For group exercises, after deciding on who will do what in each group, the groups will analyze the strategy of the company in question, as well as analyze the market and the competition, based on consideration of the strategy for the company moving forward, and present the results of the analysis during class hours and the future strategy the groups devised. The analysis, strategy development, and preparation of presentation materials in the groups will require twelve hours.
A small report will be assigned per day, requiring a total of six hours over three days.
A total of 45 learning hours will be required for the course as a whole.

Message from instructor(s)
The university primarily teaches academic knowledge in the fields of agriculture and engineering, but in the real-world technology has value only when it is connected to business. That it why it is necessary to study those approaches and methodologies, in other words program management. The teacher of this course will lecture on program management based on four decades of experience involved in technology management at a food company, and approximately ten years’ experience in researching program management.
We hope this course proves useful as real-world knowledge for those who intend to work in, or start, manufacturing companies in the future. This knowledge can also be applied in industries outside manufacturing, educational institutions and in government agencies.
