Course description |
Structural ceramics demonstrate a good performance in hardness, strength, chemical stability and so on, and they become very important materials in engineering view point. The knowledge about crystal structure and processing methods of ceramics are needed to understand these properties. The goal of this lecture is to learn the crystal structures and sintering methods of typical ceramics, and to understand thermal property, mechanical property, and electrical property with mechanism of these properties. |
Expected Learning |
(1) Understand the basic properties of ceramics which are used in various structures and products (2) Understand the processing methods of ceramics and their mechanical and electrical properties (3) Proper choice of ceramic materials for product design and usage |
Course schedule |
Lesson 1 ? What are ceramics? Understand typical properties of ceramics compared with other materials and applications for products Lesson 2 ? Crystal structures Learn the bonding of atoms in materials and the crystal structures of typical ceramics Lesson 3 ? Amorphous structures Understand the amorphous structures (glass structures) compared with crystal structures and typical inorganic glasses Lesson 4 ? Lattice defect Understand the lattice defect such as void and dislocation and the effect of these defects on material properties Lesson 5 ? Diffusion Understand the material flow in solid which is very important in material processing and the diffusion which pays very important role in high-temperature properties Lesson 6 ? Powder synthesis and sintering Learn the powder synthesis methods which are needed in processing of bulk ceramics and understand the chemical reaction in these methods, and understand the mechanism and methods of sintering of ceramics using powders and the effect of microstructure on properties Lesson 7 ? Thermal properties Learn the high melting point and low coefficient of thermal expansion which are characteristics of ceramics and understand the reason with crystal structures Lesson 8 ? Mechanical properties Learn the elastic property and hardness and understand the theoretical strength of ceramics, and learn the effect of temperature on strength and understand the mechanism of deformation and fracture, and also learn the Weibull distribution which is a statistical approach of strength of ceramics Lesson 9 ? Fracture toughness Lear the mechanics of cracks and understand the stress intensity factor and energy release rate, and learn the fracture criterion and fracture toughness Lesson 10 ? Fatigue properties Learn the crack propagation properties of cracks with cyclic loading, and understand the environmental effect of fatigue Lesson 11 ? High temperature deformation and thermal shock Learn the creep deformation and super plasticity which are dominant deformation mechanism at elevated temperature and understand these mechanisms, and understand the thermal stress due to the difference of temperature and the thermal shock fracture Lesson 12 ? Electrical properties Learn the electrical conductivity and understand the insulation properties, semiconductors and super conductivity Lesson 13 ? Dielectric properties Learn the polarization in crystal structures and understand the mechanisms of dielectric, piezoelectric, pyroelectric and ferroelectric properties Lesson 14 ? Magnetic properties Learn the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic properties and understand the induced and spontaneous magnetization Lesson 15 ? Final examination |
