Course description |
This course will provide knowledge of basic and applied researches in natural environmental conservation. Three intensive courses will be conducted. Course (1) Lecturer Dr. HwanOk Ma This course aims at comprehending the social dimensions of the complex natural resource issues by exploring the relationship between society and natural resources management. Emphasis is on social and institutional dimensions of common pool natural forest resources management Course (2) Lecturer Dr. Yoshitaka Otsuka This course aims at understanding of the relationship between green and health by studying basic knowledge and research methodology about it. Cource (3) Lecturer Dr. Ryo Hirata This class is targeting to show a concrete example about a scheme for countermeasures to natural disasters and overall flow of information in governmental works. |
Expected Learning |
(1) Learners who successfully complete this course will be able to propose a study plan to evaluate biodiversity by using various approaches. Paradigms and Theoretical Approaches to the Management of Common Pool Natural Resources “The Tragedy of the Commons” model The logic of collective action and decision-making arrangements 3rd lecture. Natural resource governance Governance and land tenure rights Conflicts and controversies Principle of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) 4th lecture. Practice of Principles of FPIC 1) Group practice of Principles of FPIC 2) Stakeholders in natural resource management 5th lecture. Natural Resource Management Approaches Co-management - community based management - Socio-ecological production landscapes approach 6th lecture. Assessing the sustainability of forest resource management 1) Principles, criteria and indicators of sustainability 2) Forest certification 3) Safeguards in natural resource management 7th lecture. Prerequisites |
This is an elective course classified as a special subject. In addition to attending 30 hours of class time, students are recommended to prepare for and review the lectures, spending this university’s standard number of hours and using lecture handouts as well as references. |

Assessment/Grading |
(1) Evacuations will be conducted by the following two ways: 1) the presentation of three short papers which will be requested during the first, the third and fourth lectures (each 20%) and 2) individual presentation. The presentation will constitute 25% of your final grade. The presentation will be assessed by the following three criteria: 1) Contents (20%) 2) Delivery (10%) 3) Comments & questions (10%) The three short papers will constitute 60% of your final grade.
