Course description |
This class aims to learn basic knowledge and current problems on sustainable use of biological resources. Participants examine the case studies on sustainable use of microbiological and organic resources. |
Expected Learning |
1. To understand the various indicators of sustainability in biological resource utilization. In particular, the participants will be able to discuss the issues of biological resource utilization widely from macro to micro view points. 2. To understand international issues of the biological resource utilization and the necessity of an interdisciplinary approach to solve them. Part I. Utilization of Microbiological Resources (Okazaki) 1. Types and examples of biological resources, especially microbiological resources 2-3. Utilization of biological resources, especially microbiological resources in agriculture: Presentations by students 4. Group discussion on the issues in utilization of biological resources. Part II. Case studies using biochar (by Oikawa) 5. Biochar from agrowastes 6. How to make biochar? 7. Biochar-bokashi making 8. Examples of evaluation of biochar properties Part III. Sustainable utilization and conservation of biological resources (by Oikawa) 9. Politics, economy and society surrounding sustainable use of biological resources 10. Nutrient cycling and various issues in agroecosystems 11. Biodiversity and conservation of seeds 12. Issues on of biological resource utilization in forest and conservation areas, especially on ecological resources |
Prerequisites |
Participants need to prepare and review the classes to respond to our standard time of 30 hours course. It is desirable to read related references voluntarily and to present the results of self-learning in the discussions during the class hours or in the term report. |
