Course description
The relationships between humans and animals are diverse. There are many perspectives to study them. In this class, students mainly learn about the relationships between humans and companion animals from the viewpoints of psychology, biology and the related fields, and discuss the coexistence with animals. This is a discussion type class that requires preparation.
This course carries 2 credits as a specialized subject.
Expected Learning
Students will be able to read academic books in English and understand the overview of the research field on human-animal coexistence.

Course schedule
1: Overview of practice and research on human-animal relationships
Students select the topics and decide the order to deal with. The following is provisional.
2: Overview of research on animal behavior and ecology
3: History of animal welfare
4: Pet loss and grief responses
5: Domestic violence, child abuse and animal abuse
6: Children and companion animals
7: Human attitudes toward companion animals
8: Qualitative studies on the relationships between humans and companion animals
9: Domestication, reproduction and heredity of dogs
10: Origin of diversity and establishment and maintenance of bloodlines in dogs
11: Mechanism and function in dog behavior
12: Behavior and sense in dogs
13: Social behavior in dogs
14: Learning in dogs
15: Behavioral problems of dogs and their adaptation in human society
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge on this field is required.
Students are recommended to prepare for and revise the classes spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University, using the handouts, etc.
