Course description
The aim of this course are obtaining basic knowledge on the wild animals kept and displayed at zoos and aquariums, and understanding characteristics, welfare, breeding management, health care, and consevation of endangered animals as roles of zoos and aquariums.
Expected Learning
(1) Understanding the characteristics of the zoo and aquarium animals which are originally wild animals.
(2) Understanding the basics of breeding management and health care of the zoo and aquarium animals.
(3) Understanding how zoos and aquariums can contribute to consevation of the endangered animal.
Course schedule
Lecture 1: Orientation of this course. The history of the zoos and the animal welfare for zoo animals.
Lecture 2: Characteristics of the zoo animals. Characteristics of zoo animals originally wild and the methods for everyday observation.
Lecture 3: Basics of the breeding management of zoo animals. Identification method for individuals, individual management, nutritional requirements, and the handling of zoo animals.
Lecture 4: Fundamental health care of zoo animals. Quarantine inspection of newly-arrived animals, disease prevention, and health care.
Lecture 5: Conservation of endangered animals and zoos. How zoos contribute to conservation of endangered animals (conservation inside and outside habitat).
Lecture 6: Difference of animals between zoos and safari parks.
Lecture 7: Management of wild animals.
Lecture 8: Anesthesia and handling methods of wild animals.
Lecture 9: Security for zoos and wild animals.
Lecture 10: Researches in zoos.  
Lecture 11: Taxonomy, morphology, and physiology of marine mammals.
Lecture 12: Capture, transportation, training, and breeding facilities for marine mammals.
Lecture 13: Individual identification, management, nutrition, and welfare for marine mammals.
Lecture 14: Diseases, diagnoses and medical treatments for marine mammals.
Lecture 15: Stranding and conservation for marine mammals.
Prerequisites
This course concerns wild animals in captivity and contributes to be fundamental of the courses "Wild life medicines" and "Conservation techniques for wild animals".
