Course description
Understand horse characteristics and learn basic handling skills.
Learn basic technique of diagnosis and treatment.
Acquire knowledge of pathology, etiology, symptoms, diagnostic procedure, treatment and prognosis of diseases unique to horses.
Understand the current situation and role of equine veterinarians in Japan.
The faculties in charge have practical experiences of clinical practice of horses and clinical practice of pigs.

Understand porcine characteristics and learn basic handling skills.
Learn basic technique of diagnosis and treatment.
Acquire knowledge of pathology, etiology, symptoms, diagnostic procedure, treatment and prognosis of diseases unique to porcine.
Understand the current situation and role of porcine veterinarians in Japan.
Expected Learning
To be able to handle a horse.
Accomplish simple diagnostic procedures (auscultation, radiography, ultrasonography etc.) and treatment procedures (injection, bandaging, simple wound management etc.).
Explain pathology, etiology, symptoms, diagnostic procedure, treatment and prognosis of diseases common in horses.

1 Lecture: Orientation
Wet Lab: Horse handling, hand-walking, chemical and physical restraint, individual identification

2 Lecture: Equine internal medicine (cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal systems)
Wet Lab: Question clinical history, clinical examination (thermometry, palpation, auscultation)

3 Lecture: Equine orthopedic disorders
Wet Lab: Gait assesment, lameness examination, bangaging

4 Lecture: Equine infectious disease
Wet Lab: Blood collection, injection and drug administration, inoculation

5 Lecture: Raceday on-track veterinarian duties
Wet Lab: Tour of Tokyo Racecourse, radiography

6 Lecture: Introduction to the Equine Research Institute (ERI)
Wet Lab: Equine treadmill observation, ultrasonography, endoscopy


6 Lecture: Introduction of porcine as a domectic animal

7 Lecture: Introduction of diseases for porcine and veterinarians for porcine

8 Wet Lab: Visit pig farm

9 Wet Lab: Visit pig farm

10 Wet Lab: Handring of pigs

11 Wet Lab: Measurement of body weight, length etc. of pigs.

12 Wet Lab: Blood sampling, vaccination of pigs.

13 Wet Lab: Administration of medicine

14 Wet Lab: Pregnancy Appraisal

15 Lecture: Summary of pig medicine.
