Course description
Students will learn the basic vocabulary and grammar and the basic communicative skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) of Spanish. Toward this goal, students need to take both “Spanish I” and “Spanish II” in the same year.

This course is offered as the first part of the two-part Spanish language course of the Global Language and Cultural Studies.
Expected Learning
Learners who successfully complete this course will be able to:
1. have basic conversations concerning daily life.
2. read and write elementary sentences based on the solid lexical and grammatical knowledge of Spanish.
3. have basic knowledge of the Spanish language and the Hispanic world.

Course schedule
Week 1 Lesson 1: Orthography and pronunciation.
Week 2 Lesson 1: Greetings and Self-presentation.
Week 3 Lesson 2: Nouns and Articles.
Week 4 Lesson 2: Conversation of shopping.
Week 5 Lesson 3: Subjective pronouns. Verb “ser”.
Week 6 Lesson 3: Adjectives. Interrogatives & Negatives. Introduction of a person.
Week 7 Lesson 1-3: Mini quiz. Lesson 4: Present indicative of regular verbs (-ar type).
Week 8 Lesson 4: Frequency. Days of the Week. Conversation on working and studying.
Week 9 Lesson 5: Present indicative of regular verbs (-er & -ir types). Possessives.
Week 10 Lesson 5: Time expressions. Conversation on daily activities.
Week 11 Lesson 4,5: Mini quiz. Lesson 6: Demonstratives and Verb “hay”.
Week 12 Lesson 6: Verb “estar”. Conversation on presence and position.
Week 13 Lesson 7: Direct object pronouns and Verbs “saber” & “conocer”.
Week 14 Lesson 7: Present indicative of verbs with irregular 1st person. Conversation on annual events.
Week 15 Wrap-up and Final exam.
Prerequisites
It is desirable to take the classes of “Spanish II” and “Spanish for Intercultural Understsanding” to acquire comprehensively the basic skill of the language.
Students are recommended to spend 45 minutes in preparing for each class, and another 45 minutes in completing assignments and revising the class.

Final exam 70%
Class participation and results of quizzes 30%
Students absent more than five times are not qualified to take the final exam.
