Course description
Aim: The aims of this course are to understand scientifically and comprehensively the conditions of a forest ecosystem that consists of living parts (i.e. trees, mammals, insects, microorganisms etc.), non-living parts (environmental factors), and their interactions.
Summary: This course provides the topics of 1) the concept and characteristics of forest ecosystems, 2) material production and nutrient cycling, 3) living organisms that constitute forest ecosystems, and 4) the interactions between the biotic and abiotic factors in the systems, and thus resulting in developing a better judge of forest ecosystems.
Expected Learning
Criterion for achievement: To obtain the basic knowledge for sound growth of forests and for evaluation of soundness of them, by understanding the rules of forest ecosystems.
Corresponding criteria in the Diploma Policy: See the Curriculum maps.

In addition to 30 hours that students spend in the class, students are recommended to prepare for and revise the lectures, spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University and using the lecture handouts as well as the references specified below. We assign preparations for lessons every class to develop an understanding of topics of our course.
Required Text(s) and Materials
We provide a handout accordingly.

Assessment/Grading
Evaluating the submitted four reports of 1) Material production, nutrient cycling and microbes, 2) Trees and fungi, 3) Mammals, 4) Insects and soil fauna, in forest ecosystems: the each score accounts for 25% of the total scores. We do not evaluate the scores of a person who attends less than 70% of this course.
