Course description
Comparative psychology is basically a field of psychological research on animals except humans, but presupposes a comparison between humans and non-human animals. In this lecture, we will introduce the characteristics of cognitive mechanisms for each species revealed from animal behavioral experiments, and consider how the cognition of animals including humans has evolved.
*This course is included in the department's specialized courses.
Expected Learning
1) Understanding how to analyze animal behavior and to interpret cognitive processes behind behavior.
2) Explaining cognitive diversity in various animals in terms of phylogeny and adaptation.
3) Understanding cognitive characteristics of humans by comparing with other animals.

Course schedule
 This course introduces higher cognitive functions, such as communication, consciousness and concept. It is recommended that this course be taken in conjunction with "Ethology," which introduces more basic cognitive functions.
