Course description |
This course aims to learn the background and process of forest and agricultural development and the changes in ecological and social environment by focusing on the case studies in developing regions, especially Southeast Asia, and to learn agricultural and forestry development approaches widely from international to grassroots, and discuss various possibilities of international agricultural and forest development while paying attention to regional issues in Japan. |
Expected Learning |
Students will be able to understand the background and process of forest and agricultural development in developing regions and the changes in ecological and social environment from multiple perspectives, and to discuss the development approaches widely. Development, conservation, and restoration of tropical forests 4. Traditional agriculture and its transformation 5. The past and the present of plantation/estate development 6. Green Revolution and recent efforts of sustainable agriculture and forestry 7. Grassroots international agriculture and forestry cooperation: NGOs, local governments, universities 8. Thinking about feedback to Japan (presentations of report assignment by students) |
Prerequisites |
Sufficient preparation and review are required according to the standard time of 15 hours of our university. It is recommended to voluntarily read related materials based on the lecture and utilize them in the Q & A, reaction papers, and final report assignments during the course. |

Assessment/Grading |
The evaluation is made comprehensively by reaction papers (40%) to assess the each participant's understanding and by final report assignment (60%) to assess each participant's efforts of problem-finding, learning, and discussions. |
