Course description
This intensive course is one of the subjects for "International Agricultural Science" and "AIMS Program" and provides basic theories and outdoor practical exercise of charcoal making (biomass carbonization) through online class. Participants learn how to make charcoal (biochar) from bamboo and agricultural residues, then, share and exchange the ideas on how to use charcoal for agricultural development and environmental conservation in participants' countries.
Expected Learning
1) To understand the basic theories and skills of charcoal making.
2) to exchange ideas on charcoal application for improving agriculture and environment in home countries.

Course schedule
On the first day (10:00 to 13:00) field exercise on charcoal making
1. Agrowaste and local biomass
2. Pit kiln: Making charcoal from bamboo and mulberry branches
3. Drum kiln and Iwate kiln: Structure and working process
4. Chimney-standing device for making rice husk/sawdust charcoal
5. Challenges for smoke-less charcoal making.

On the second day (10:00 to 13:00) Online lecture and exercise
6. (Lecture) TUAT's Charcoal Project in Vietnam
7-8. (Exercise: Group work and discussion) How can we apply charcoal technology for rural livelihoods and environmental conservation?
Prerequisites
Participants need to register the Google Classroom (class code: sodk3pv) and send e-mail to the instructor (Oikawa: ft9253@go.tuat.ac.jp) by September 20, 2021.

Reaction papers and positive participation during the class (60 %) and an assignment report after the class (40 %)
